Mental Health Support Program – United States

Fire fighters have occupational exposure to a unique set of carcinogens that predispose them to many types of cancer. A cancer diagnosis can present a host of physical, emotional, financial, and practical challenges for patients and their families. Those affected by cancer often experience emotional distress, an increased need for mental health support services, and a diminished quality of life.

The Fire Fighter Cancer Project was developed by Pancreatic Cancer North America to address the unique experience of fire fighters diagnosed with cancer.

Our cancer-focused mental health support program features individual access to professional oncology social workers with special expertise in the psychosocial implications of cancer. This expertise includes helping each patient and family through the physical, emotional, and practical consequences of cancer throughout the many stages of their treatment, including the onset of disease, diagnosis, treatment, recovery, post-treatment survivorship, and end-of-life/grief. There is evidence that psychosocial support leads to improved outcomes, including quality of life during and after treatment, and can positively impact survival.

Key features of the program include:

  • Information about specific cancer diagnoses and treatment options, personalized for each patient.
  • Referrals to resource navigation services, through which an oncology social worker can connect clients to resources, referrals, and related assistance with the aim of helping them overcome barriers to care.
  • Immediate access to educational programs and publications that provide treatment updates on specific cancer diagnoses and other topics of interest to cancer patients.
  • Referrals to live and online support groups as needed.
  • Psychosocial support.
  • Referrals to financial assistance for needs related to transportation to and from treatment, pain medication, homecare, childcare, medical supplies, and copayment assistance (chemotherapy and targeted treatment therapies).

The Fire Fighter Cancer Project is proud to work with CancerCare as our program delivery partner.
